• The Beaches!! (surfing is an important part of local culture. There are several major beach areas in the city, all with unique personality (all have surfing, surfing lessons & equipment rental):
Ocean Beach: old Bohemian, head shops, public fishing pier (an international scene with ordinary folks from all over fishing for their dinner at all hours of the day & night). This is colorful, not slick. Mission Beach & Pacific Beach: These two beaches are the party beaches. Heavy youth orientation. Drinking is legal on the beach (no glass), several kilometers of board walks, indigenous roller blade culture etc. La Jolla: gorgeous, wealthy, picture postcard, underwater wildlife preserve (great for snorkelling), ocean kayak rental, great for walking, many places to lie on the grass or the sand. La Jolla village a short walk from beach—upscale restaurants, clothing, galleries etc. MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) – short walk from beach.
